Signs Your Pet May Be In Pain...

9/4/2018

Happy September!

This month is National Animal Pain Awareness Month.

While not a cause for celebration (pain) it is important to recognize and bring awareness to pain and pain issues (for humans too)!

Animals are masters of disguising behavior and obviously their non-verbal characteristics make them unable to say, "HEY human, this hurts!"

Today let's list some possible signs that your kitty may be experiencing pain:

  • Increased body temperature
  • Increased heart rate
  • Increased breathing rate
  • Inability to rest
  • Changes in activity level (usually less active but some cats may pace or seem MORE active because they are restless)
  • Sitting in corners or the back of the couch (i.e., towards the rear or in smaller spaces)
  • Changes in his/her regular personality
  • Decreased grooming habits (or their fur looks to be in poor condition
  • Acting grouchy when touched
  • Fixed gaze
  • Dilated pupils
  • Not eating as much (or drinking)
  • Changes in vocalization -both in sound and how much "talking"

This is by no means a conclusive list.

September should not just be the National Animal Pain Awareness Month; it should be every month in the calendar. Us pet owners should take full responsibility on the well-being of our pets. It is true that they are the masters of disguising behavior and it is impossible for us to understand them because they cannot verbally communicate with us. That is why, regular checkups are important for our fur babies. They love us more than we love them. let us not take their love for granted by neglecting their health.
