Cognitive Dysfunction and Older Pets...

Cognitive dysfunction is a sign of an aging brain. It basically means issues with thinking and processing, and it happens in both people and pets. Sometimes you will see it abbreviated as "C.D.S" or Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome.

Since our pets are living longer lives, this is a fact to be aware of and take appropriate measures to lessen the effects.

Some signs of it's presence may include:
  • Restlessness (pacing and odd sleep habits especially when these occur at night)
  • Depression (in the form of less or more vocalizations than usual, isolation
  • Anxiety (which could be expressed as fear or aggression)
  • Disorientation
  • Toileting issues

There are ways to maintain the brain's function if not slow down the processes while increasing health and quality of life.

I get questions all the time on what pet parents can do, and here are some of the things to implement:
  • Providing sensory-type stimulation (i.e., classical music, smells/pheromones, touch/brushing/massage, new and familiar sights)
  • Teaching new tricks!
  • Having them maintain a healthy body weight
  • Giving nutraceuticals (i.e., fish oil, glucosamine, NSAIDs, etc)
  • Offering consistent and appropriate physical activity
  • Continuing to give socialization and bonding experiences with you and the family!

I would love to have your thoughts and experiences!

What a GREAT idea to teach an old dog new tricks! Activating the brain is always a step in the right direction! ❤️
