Being aware of your pet's vital signs in terms of what is "normal" will help you recognize when your pet might be ill. DOG CAT Respiratory Rate (Breathing) 10-40 breaths/minute 20-40 breaths/minute Heart Rate (Pulse) 140-220bpm Less than 30lbs 80-140beats per minute (bpm) More than 30lbs 50-110bpm Temperature 100.5-102.50 100.5-102.50 Capillary Refill Time (CRT) 1-2 seconds 1-2 seconds Mucous Membrane (Gums) Color Pink Pale pink to pink Hydration 1-2 seconds 1-2 seconds These are ranges only and a difference that is “borderline” is probably not cause to panic.
Your pet’s values can change day to day and for a number of different reasons. For instance, an animal's state of alertness and activity will affect the results. If taken first thing in the morning or after sleeping, the numbers are going to be lower because the circulatory functions have decreased. Similarly, if vital signs are measured during or after vigorous activity, the numbers will be higher (even temperature to an extent). Pets that are conditioned and “in-shape” will have lower heart rates and lower breathing rates in general, just as with people. Stress is also a factor that can skew results. Since there are variances between animals, breeds, species...it is important to be familiar with what YOUR pet's normal is.
